Smoking Cessation: Guidelines for Health Professionals Guidelines
commissioned by the Health Education Authority, which outline what the National Health Service
(NHS) can contribute to a national smoking cessation strategy. Their purpose is to recommend
effective interventions to encourage and help smokers stop, to make the case for allocation of
funds to smoking cessation, and to propose the integration of smoking cessation interventions
into routine clinical care throughout the health care system. They are for health
commissioners, managers and clinicians. The recommendations are based on published research.
They are accompanied by guidance for commissioners on the cost effectiveness of smoking
cessation.
